About Weisser Park Elementary School

Weisser Park Historic Building 1

Weisser Park Elementary School is named for the neighborhood in which it is located. It is part of the district’s arts magnet program, serving students in first through fifth grades. The arts magnet program began in 1979 at Whitney Young Elementary school, and in 1981, expanded to Weisser Park. The grade levels served at Weisser Park changed over the years, and at one time was considered one school with two sites with Whitney Young. The arts program aims to educate students through a fusion of rigorous academics and distinguished art instruction. The curriculum for music, visual arts, theater arts and dance, is based on the National Standards for Arts Education. An expanded school day offers additional instruction in band, strings, choir, piano, theater arts, dance, pottery, textiles, chimes, photography, drawing and painting. Spanish instruction is offered to all students and the school offers the English Language Learners (ELL) program.

The school was built in 1964, and as one of the district’s seven magnet schools, it does not draw its students from a geographic boundary. Students from Weisser Park feed into Memorial Park Middle School and South Side High School. The school is located in the Board of School Trustees District 4.
