Seminar Courses

Preparing Students for Success

Through our Schools of Success powered by 3DE, students have experiences connecting their core academic studies with real world relevancy. In high school, this foundation is built in a series of courses called “Seminars,” which are similar to the college model of allowing students to explore topics more deeply and through a variety of learning experiences.

Seminar Courses

By the end of junior year, students will have a stronger sense of direction and a personalized plan for their future.

Opting Out:

We understand each student’s Portrait of a Graduate will be unique to their interests and future plans. To accommodate individual circumstances, we offer a variety of options to maximize each student’s time in high school. This could include:
  • 8th period (after-school courses)
  • 0 hour (before-school courses)
  • Block scheduling (shared teacher instructional time across courses)
  • Summer school (course acceleration)
  • Online coursework

If none of these options meet the student’s needs, a meeting will be scheduled with the school counselor to discuss opting out of the seminar courses. Please reach out to your child’s school counselor to discuss these options.

CONSIDER THE BENEFITS

Schools of Success is built on smaller learning communities, helping students:

  • Build stronger connections. Students work with a core group of teachers and classmates, which help students feel connected, supported and prepared for success in high school and beyond.
  • Keep educational passion alive. Students work one-on-one with their school counselor to select courses required for graduation, electives of their choice and the ability to explore other subject areas of interest.
  • Develop a plan for success after graduation. Through the Seminar courses offered 9th, 10th & 11th grades, students engage in meaningful career exploration and learn practical life skills connected to real-world experiences.
  • Create their own high school experience. Each student’s journey is unique. Through the Schools of Success, students have flexibility to learn beyond the traditional school day, including summer programs, online learning and college offerings through the FWCS Higher Education Coalition, a partnership with seven local colleges and universities.

Why is this transformation needed?

The changes FWCS are all about how can we make the high school experience better. FWCS has long offered college prep and career-based programs. The Schools of Success are designed to give all students the experiences they need to be successful in life after high school, whether they enroll in college, enlist in the military or enter the workforce as an employee or entrepreneur. Throughout high school, they will meet and work with business and community leaders to explore career opportunities in northeast Indiana and beyond. These experiences will help them find their future career path and give them local, state and national connections to access when they are ready to begin their career. The skills they gain are the skills employers look for most in employees - the ability to communicate and work with others, the ability to think critically and approach challenges creatively, and other important life skills.
