Two hundred students will start the 2011-12 school year with a backpack full of new supplies from Fort Wayne Community Schools employees. Several FWCS employees will spend Friday morning packing backpacks with pencils, rulers, personal hygiene products and other necessities. This is the 18th year the employees in the Grile Administrative Center, Media Services, South Transportation, Nutrition Services, Warehouse & Delivery and Maintenance & Operations have put the bags together for FWCS students. The majority of the bags and supplies are purchased with money raised throughout the year by employees who make a donation each week to dress down on Casual Day Fridays. This year, the project also received significant contributions from Do it Best Corp., Baker & Daniels, FWCS Textbook Rental, FWCS Media Services, Meijer on Lima Road, Office Max and Walgreens. After the bags are packed on Friday, they will be given to elementary school case managers, who will work with principals to distribute them discreetly to students in need. Those needing assistance with school supplies should contact staff at their child's school. FWCS also works with a number of other outside organizations to assist our many students in need.

With nearly 30,000 students, Fort Wayne Community Schools is one of the largest school districts in Indiana. FWCS proudly allows families to choose any of its 50 schools through its successful school-choice program creating diversity in each school, including some with more than 75 languages spoken. FWCS offers seven magnet schools focusing on areas such as science and math, communication, fine arts or Montessori at the elementary and middle school level. In high school, students can choose from the prestigious International Baccalaureate program, Project Lead the Way or New Tech Academy as well as other rigorous academic and specialty training programs.
