Anthis students now cooking for Grile staff - September 09, 2010

Students in Anthis Career Center's Culinary Arts program are now providing food service for the Grile Administrative Center cafeteria. Beginning this week, students are establishing the menus, preparing the food and serving in the cafeteria. The move provides another opportunity for students in the culinary arts program to gain experience in food preparation and service. They already provide meals for the Anthis cafeteria and operate Barr Street Café, a restaurant operating out of the Anthis Career Center. The change also saves the district about $37,000 by eliminating the need for Nutrition Services employees to prepare food and serve in the cafeteria. This is a great opportunity for our students to get real-world experience while saving the school district money, Culinary Arts Instructor Melissa Snider said. Many of our students plan to pursue culinary arts as a career, which requires a variety of skills from food planning to food preparation to food serving. This experience offers all three. The menu created by students is a departure from the traditional lunch items that are often served in a cafeteria. During the first week, students planned to prepare Creole lasagna, sesame lime steak, banana split bars and tiramisu cheesecake bars, among many other items.


With nearly 30,000 students, Fort Wayne Community Schools is one of the largest school districts in Indiana. FWCS proudly allows families to choose any of its 50 schools through its successful school-choice program creating diversity in each school, including some with more than 75 languages spoken. FWCS offers seven magnet schools focusing on areas such as science and math, communication, fine arts or Montessori at the elementary and middle school level. In high school, students can choose from the prestigious International Baccalaureate program, Project Lead the Way or New Tech Academy as well as other rigorous academic and specialty training programs.
