Lindley Elementary School, 2201 Ardmore Ave., will have an open house from 1:30-3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, to celebrate the school's acceptance into the International Spanish Academy. All former Lindley Spanish immersion students, families and staff members are invited to attend the event. The school was invited to join the academy program, a prestigious program partnering schools with the Ministry of Education and Science in Spain, earlier this year. The program is made up of 37 top-performing Spanish Immersion schools throughout the United States and Canada. Lindley is one of only three public Spanish Immersion schools in Indiana and the only one in northern Indiana. It is unique in that it is in an urban school district serving a racially and socio-economically diverse population and has no academic restrictions on who can attend. Lindley's Spanish Immersion program started in the fall of 1992. Students receive their language arts instruction, which includes reading, writing, and spelling, in English during half of the day. The other half of the day – when math, science, social studies and Spanish are taught – is conducted in Spanish. Last week, the school was officially incorporation into the International Spanish Academy at the organization's annual seminar in Los Angeles.
With nearly 30,000 students, Fort Wayne Community Schools is one of the largest school districts in Indiana. FWCS offers seven magnet schools focusing on areas such as science and math, communication, fine arts or Montessori at the elementary and middle school level. In high school, students can choose from the prestigious International Baccalaureate program, Project Lead the Way or New Tech Academy as well as other rigorous academic and specialty training programs.
