On Friday, May 25, at 10:15 a.m. one North Side High School student with an outstanding attendance record will win the keys to a sporty white 1997 Pontiac Grand Am GT compliments of Kelley Chevrolet. The drawing takes place as part of North Side's Renaissance Program, a year-long effort to encourage and reward students with positive incentives. We have special opportunities and programs for the kids who excel and for those who come from disadvantaged homes. This is designed to reach kids in the middle who work hard every day and do the right thing, explains North Side principal Chuck DeFord. Eligible students were allowed to miss only one day of school and could not be late to class more than five times. Since the incentive began in October, 230 students qualified and the school's attendance has been significantly higher than its peer schools. We've seen the greatest improvement in timeliness, said guidance counselor Heather Case. Kids are really hustling to make sure they get to class on time. Many students didn't believe us, said Chuck DeFord of the car giveaway. When they see this little white sports car complete with spoiler and sun roof, it's going to be a huge carrot for next year. They're going to work even harder to get their name in the hat. Chuck Kelley, of Kelley Chevrolet, said they wanted to be a good neighbor to the school. We like this program because it focuses on effort and anyone can win, he said. There's a correlation in life between effort and results, and we want to help these quality kids keep focused.
