BACKGROUND: Second-grade teachers in public and private schools across Allen County are delivering a very important safety message to their students this month! Are You Ready? is a disaster preparedness program designed last school year by a team of four students from Memorial Park Middle School. The project won the national Christopher Columbus Award, which encourages students to identify a community problem and, with community leaders, attempt to solve it. The team paired up with the Allen County School Safety Commission (ACSSC) and used funds from the award to create the teacher packets. For the kickoff, the former Memorial Park students (they are in high school this year) will spend about 20 minutes going through the program they created with second-graders from Cedar Canyon. Media are invited to watch the program. At about 12:50 p.m., there will be an opportunity to speak with the students, teachers and officials from ACSSC.
