Title I parents - come one, come all! - March 02, 2007
Fort Wayne Community Schools will hold its annual Title I Parents as Partners spring conference from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 27 at Pilgrim Baptist Church. More than 150 parents from the district's 11 Title I schools are expected to attend the event. Studies show students are more successful if their parents actively participate in their education. The conference is aimed at providing parents with resources and information to do just that. Workshops will include information about family literacy and mathematics; understanding ISTEP+, AYP and NCLB, and much more. All parents attending will receive books and other educational aides to help them work with their student at home. Door prizes include gift cards from Wal-Mart and Kroger's, and merchandise from Lowe's Home Improvement, Vera Bradley, Meijer and a number of fast-food restaurants. Breakfast and lunch will be served. The event is free. Title I schools are so designated by the federal government because they have high percentages of students who are on the free/reduced price meal program, an indicator of poverty. FWCS Title I schools are: Abbett, Adams, Bloomingdale, Fairfield, Maplewood, Nebraska, Northcrest, Scott, South Wayne, Study and Washington elementary schools.
