Bloomingdale Elementary School will become a fashion runway on Tuesday, Oct. 17 when representatives of several local clothing stores bring a new coat and all the accessories for each of the 345 students! It's all part of the Keeping Kids Warm Coat Give-Away that Charming Shoppes (Fashion Bug, Lane Bryant and Catherines) holds nationwide. Last year, Bloomingdale language facilitator Cindy VanBrocklin wrote an essay about Bloomingdale student's need for new cold-weather attire. A Title I school, Bloomingdale has over 90 percent of its students in the free/reduce meal program, an indicator of poverty. VanBrocklin submitted her essay to Charming Shoppes and was recently notified that Bloomingdale was one of 31 schools in the nation to be selected. Students will be fitted with their new coat by volunteers from the local clothing stores from 9-11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17 at the school, 1300 Orchard St. Each student will also receive a hat, gloves, scarf and bookbag. Media are invited. Principal is Rebecca Schaefer. For information, call the school at 425-7317.
