May is Water Safety Month; Natatorium Swim Lessons Begin Soon - May 25, 2017
Registration for summer swim lessons at the Helen P. Brown Natatorium, 3301 S. Calhoun St., begins Tuesday, May 30, just as Water Safety Month wraps up.
Earlier this month, Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb declared the month of May to be National Water Safety Month, a proclamation encouraged by HPB staff members.
“Education in water safety plays a key role in preventing drownings and water-related injuries,” said Liz Caywood, HPB Natatorium Director. “There is no better way to be safe around water than to learn how to swim.”
Summer swim lessons at the Natatorium are offered once a week in the evenings starting June 12 for ages 1 through adult or daytime lessons June 19-29 and July 10-20 for school-aged kids.
In addition to reducing the risk of drowning, swimming also provides a total body workout, improves academic performance among students and is a lifelong recreational and aerobic activity.
“Swimming is fun, and it is a great work-out,” Caywood said. “With summer starting soon, we want families to have fun and be safe.”
