Career Academy Students Show Off Skills at Regional Competition

FWCS Career Academy students will showcase their best work during the Indiana SkillsUSA Regional Competition Saturday, Feb. 9.

Nearly 50 students will compete in the Construction Trades competition beginning at 9 a.m. at the Construction Trades building, 125 Murray St. Construction categories include carpentry, masonry, cabinet making, electrical, sheet metal, plumbing and team work.

Students will also compete in the following competitions at various locations throughout the area:

  • Advertising Design, University of Saint Francis, 2701 Spring St.
  • Automotive Service and Precision Machining, Ivy Tech, 3701 Dean Dr.
  • Automotive Collision Repair, Ivy Tech, Opportunity Drive
  • Commercial Baking, Culinary Arts and Restaurant Service, Ivy Tech, 3800 N. Anthony Blvd.
  • Cosmetology, Esthetics and Nail Care, Fairfield High School, 67530 US-33, Goshen
  • Welding, Plumbers & Steamfitters Local 166, 2930 W. Ludwig Road

The competitions are free for guests and supporters to attend and cheer on students. The top five in each competition will advance to the State SkillsUSA competition in April.

With nearly 30,000 students, Fort Wayne Community Schools is one of the largest school districts in Indiana. FWCS proudly allows families to choose any of its 50 schools through its successful school-choice program creating diversity in each school, including some with more than 75 languages spoken. FWCS offers seven magnet schools focusing on areas such as science and math, communication, fine arts or Montessori at the elementary and middle school level. In high school, students can choose from the prestigious International Baccalaureate program, Project Lead the Way or New Tech Academy as well as other rigorous academic and specialty training programs.
