New Curriculum Increases Rigor, Prepares Students for the Future

Teachers write new curriculum

For three weeks this summer, nearly 150 Fort Wayne Community Schools teachers returned to work to help write new math and language arts curriculum, which would be implemented when students returned to the classroom for the 2018-19 school year.

Teachers from all levels - elementary, middle and high school - were involved in the curriculum writing focusing on specific grade levels for English/Language Arts and Math. The new curriculum supports all eighth-graders taking algebra, followed by algebra II in ninth-grade and geometry in 10th grade.

“We are at a point where we recognize the need for a universal, rigorous curriculum across all schools and grade levels in the District,” Superintendent Dr. Wendy Robinson said. “This curriculum is designed to challenge students to their potential and allow teachers to focus on the individual needs of students as they move through the curriculum.”

The writing process is being completed with the support of the Charles A. Dana Center at The University of Texas as Austin, which is known for its expertise in mathematics curriculum, and CentrePoint Education Solutions, which is assisting with the language arts curriculum. The federally funded PEER Grant is paying for the process.

When the new school year began, teachers starting using the new curriculum immediately. Next summer, teachers will write the remaining math and language arts grades, followed by science and social studies curricula in the summer of 2020.

Teachers who participated in the curriculum writing said it will allow them to focus on what matters most in the classroom - the students.

"Teachers spend so much time looking for resources and writing lesson plans. They don’t have to do that anymore," said Tametris Marsh, fourth-grade teacher at Weisser Park Elementary School. "Our time can be focused on our data and really engaging with our students and building those relationships."
