School-Based Mental Health at Fort Wayne Community Schools

Taking care of our mental health is important and leads to SAFER Schools! Our licensed therapists are here to help support the mental and emotional health of our students.

WHAT WE PROVIDE

  • Individual therapy and group therapy with parental consent
  • Help students, staff and classrooms to increase social skills, coping skills and emotional vocabulary to understand each other and improve learning
  • All FWCS students from pre-K through grade 12 are eligible

Frequently Asked Questions

HOW DOES IT WORK?

It starts with a referral

  • Students can be referred by parents, staff, administrators or even self-referred
  • The therapist will coordinate with the referral source to assess how services can benefit the student
  • The therapist will seek parent consent
  • Therapist and teachers coordinate the best time to meet with therapist to be the least disruptive to student learning
  • Therapist works with student, staff and family to develop goals for treatment, then begins services

WHY MIGHT A STUDENT BE REFERRED?

  • Excessive worrying
  • Depressed mood
  • Grief/ Trauma responses
  • Irritability
  • Self-harm
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Withdrawal/ Regressive Behaviors
  • Substance use
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Anger outbursts
  • Acting out in class
  • Relationship problems with peers or adults
  • Frequent temper tantrums
  • Running from the classroom
  • Social isolation

IS IT CONFIDENTIAL?

  • These services are confidential and the students are protected by both FERPA and HIPAA privacy acts
  • Parents are given updates including goals, interventions used and progress
  • Limits to confidentiality include wanting to hurt self or others, experiencing abuse

WHAT ARE THE THERAPISTS' QUALIFICATIONS?

  • Master’s degree in social work, mental health counseling or related field.
  • Additional training working with children and adolescents in a school setting
  • Participate in department supervision meetings

IS THERE A COST?

There is no cost to the student, their families or their insurance

  • The therapists’ positions are state and grant funded to support all students
