School Choice Lottery

Fort Wayne Community Schools welcomes all students. Students are assigned to a school based on residence, but as a district of choice, families can also choose another school within the District. FWCS has successfully offered school choice for nearly 40 years. Families interested in applying for a school must fill out an application and submit it by the deadline. All applications received after the on-time deadline will be accepted but considered as late and be placed on the waiting list. A public lottery will be held when applications exceed spots available at a specific school or grade level. Transportation is not provided to students who transfer to another school, except those enrolled in a magnet school.

The FWCS School Choice Lottery opens Friday, Nov. 1. On-time applications are accepted through Monday, March 3, with the lottery drawing held on Thursday, March 27.

High School Lottery Changes for 2024-25

  • As Fort Wayne Community Schools moves to its Schools of Success model, most Programs of Study will be phased out.
  • Students currently enrolled in a Program of Study at any FWCS high school and receiving transportation because they are in a Program of Study will continue to have access to transportation through senior year as long as they remain in the Program of Study. This will end with the Class of 2027.
  • Additional students will no longer be accepted into Programs of Study at North Side, Northrop and Snider high schools or the Early College program at Wayne High School.
  • Lottery applications will be accepted for students interested in enrolling in New Tech Academy at Wayne or the International Baccalaureate program at South Side. Transportation will be provided to students enrolled in these programs as long as they are outside the No Transportation Zone for the school they selected.
  • The Class of 2028 is the first to participate in the FWCS Schools of Success. Ninth graders will be part of the FWCS Freshman School of Success at their high school.
  • In December 2024, the Class of 2028 will select which School of Success they will follow through graduation: the School of Health Sciences & Human Services; the School of Manufacturing, Engineering, Technology & Trades; or the School of Business & the Arts. Each high school will offer programs in all three schools.
  • Additional information about the programs offered at each high school will be available at each school's Freshman Orientation and Open House in January 2025.
  • Families are welcome to apply to a school other than their geographically assigned school, but transportation may not be provided.
