In the Local News

Aaron Eastom, principal at Maplewood Elementary School, has been nominated for the Staff Honor Roll for his outstanding leadership and care for staff and students. After a substitute teacher was seriously injured in 2025, Eastom brought the school community together to send over 200 cards and personally delivered them to the hospital. He continues to check in and support the substitute’s return to work.

The nomination highlights his everyday commitment to making sure everyone at Maplewood feels valued and supported.

How We Support

Substitute Institute
A monthly opportunity for substitute teachers to connect, learn and be heard. Each session brings subs together to share feedback, explore new ideas and gain valuable support through training, resources and guest speakers. It’s one more way the district invests in substitutes, ensuring they feel prepared, supported and an important part of the school community.

Connecting with kids and watching them progress and grow is the reason why I keep coming back. They get excited to see me when I walk in the door and want to share their accomplishments with me. It's a fantastic feeling to know that you're part of their journey.

Interacting with the students through subbing made me rethink what I wanted to do. The more time I spent in the buildings, the more I realized I wanted to teach full-time. There are a lot of great things happening in Fort Wayne Community Schools and it reminds me of the community I grew up in. Just being around the diversity and many different cultures automatically puts these students at an advantage.

I keep coming back because I love to get to know the students. I started going to a few schools selectively so I could continue to build those relationships. I give stickers out to kids every time I sub and I love when they show me their notebooks filled with stickers that I've given them in the past; it's so cool. I also love how the district recognizes its employees. I received a Shout Out from a secretary in the mail and it really made me feel valued.
