What is the GED Test?

The GED is a battery of five tests. The questions in each of the tests require the use of general knowledge and thinking skills. The GED test is designed to measure the important knowledge and skills, usually learned during high school that some people have learned in other ways. Each test is multiple choice except part II of the Writing Skills test. Scratch paper will be provided and dictionaries are not allowed.

Who may take the GED Test?

Anyone 17 years old and older may take the GED test.

You may take the GED test at the age of 17 if you meet following guidelines:

• You must have successfully completed a course of study for the GED tests.
• You must provide documentation of having passed an official GED practice test.
• You must provide an Exit Interview Form from the last school you attended, signed by the principal of that school, by your parent or legal guardian and by the superintendent of the school district. The exit interview verifies that you are officially withdrawn from school.

All clients must be a resident of Indiana for at least 30 days and they must bring the following:

• Indiana State issued picture I.D, valid passport, or Matricula Consular or Certificate of Consular Registration issued by the Mexican government
• Two other forms of I.D (e.g. birth certificate, library card, video card, paycheck stub, insurance card, utility bill)
• $65.00 fee - cash only (subject to change at anytime). Re-takes are $12.00 per section.

Do I get a regular high school diploma if I pass the GED Test?

No. Regular high school diplomas are not issued on the basis of passing the GED test. You will be able to get a "State of Indiana General Educational Development (GED) Diploma."

What if I fail the GED Test?

If you do not achieve the minimum standard score there is a waiting period for retesting. One or more tests may be taken again - at a cost of an additional $12.00 each - to bring the average up to the required 450 standard score. The choice of tests to be retaken is up to the applicant with the following exception: any test on which that standard score is less than 410 must be retaken.

What do the tests cover?

TEST 1 - LANGUAGE ARTS, WRITING
(Part 1) - You will be asked to spot misspelled words, punctuate sentences, pick out errors in grammar, and use the best word or words from a selection of several possibilities. Allotted time - 1 hour and 15 minutes for 50 items.
(Part 2) - You will write a short 5 paragraph essay (200-300 words) on a subject or issue that is familiar to adults. Understanding the topic requires no special knowledge. Scratch paper will be provided for you to plan, draft, and make revisions and corrections. Allotted time - 45 minutes.
TEST 2 - SOCIAL STUDIES - You will read short social studies articles, and you will answer several questions based on either a written or graphic stimulus. Allotted time - 1 hour and 25 minutes for 50 items.
TEST 3 - SCIENCE - This test is set up the same as Test 2, except that the topics are scientific in nature Allotted time - 1 hour and 35 minutes for 50 items.
TEST 4 - LANGUAGE ARTS, READING - You will read passages taken from literature or non-fiction texts and then answer questions that measure your ability to understand, apply, and analyze. The test does not ask questions that require you to already be familiar with the literary work. Allotted time - 1 hour and 5 minutes for 40 items.
TEST 5 - MATHEMATICS - This test is a mixture of math questions, including fractions, a little geometry, some very elementary algebra, and problems to be read and solved. The main focus of the test is to solve mathematical problems. Scratch paper is provided. Calculators are allowed on half the test. Allotted time - 1 hour and 30 minutes for 50 items.

I think I'm ready to take the GED Test, where do I go?

If study preparation is required before the test is taken, contact the Continuing Education Office at the Anthis Career Center, Room 120, 1200 South Barr Street (260/467-1060). To register for the official test, bring the necessary information to the GED TESTING DEPARTMENT at the Anthis Career Center. Taking the test must be scheduled ahead. The testing department is open for registration Monday through Thursday, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in room 6. If you have any questions regarding the official test, you may call 260/467-1145.

What if I am not ready to take the GED Test and need classes?

If study preparation is required before the test is taken or you want to take the assessment test, contact Continuing Education at the Anthis Career Center at 467-1060. Study opportunities are available through classes at Continuing Education and various locations around Fort Wayne. See below for more information on classes and locations.

Adult Basic Education:
Adult Basic Education classes provide adults the opportunity to develop skills in English, writing skills, reading, math, social studies and science to prepare for the GED Test or the Graduation Qualifying Exam (GQE).

Classes also provide skill improvement for pre-employment testing, and basic skill development for entrance to college or vocational training.

Adult learners will be pre-tested to determine the areas where basic skill improvement is needed followed by the development of a study plan to assist learner in achieving their individual goals.

Classes are at NO COST and are available morning, afternoon and evening at various locations throughout the city.

Graduates of the GED program and Anthis high school diploma recipients are eligible to participate in a cap and gown graduation ceremony at the Scottish Rite Auditorium.

About our ADULT LEARNING CENTER

The daytime Adult Learning Center is open to students 18 years of age or older who, (1) are not currently enrolled in a regular day school program, or, (2) whose class has graduated, or, (3) received special department permission. Registration for daytime offerings is "continuous" so that a course can be started on any Monday.

About our ACADEMIC CLASSES:

• Regular high school subjects are offered to adults who wish to receive a high school diploma or for general review. High school credit will be granted when all requirements for the subjects have been completed.
• Daytime and evening classes:
  • English courses 9 through 12 are offered for credit and self-improvement.
  • Mathematics include General Math, Consumer Math 1 & 2, Algebra 1 & 2, Advanced Algebra 3 & 4 and Geometry 1 & 2. These are offered for high school credit or general review.
  • Social Studies includes World History 1 & 2, U.S. History 1 & 2, Government, Sociology & Economics, World Geography.

• Additional evening classes are available in Biology, Physical Sciences, and Health

Students working for high school completion through Continuing Education must secure a transcript from the last high school attended.

Those who wish to graduate through their home school must secure a Continuing Education Referral form from their high school guidance office listing the specific classes required. This form must be brought with the student when registering for class.

Limited H.S. credits may be granted to adults for homemaking, work & military experience.

Evening classes are open to adults 16 yrs. of age or older.
