Students at Weisser Park Elementary School are working in a state-of-the-art music composition lab this year thanks to a partnership developed between Weisser Park and Sweetwater Sound. The lab features cutting edge technology that will allow students to write, produce and record their own music CDs or DVDs while learning some of the technical aspects of the music industry.
The partnership developed with the assistance of parents at Weisser Park who are also employees of Sweetwater Sound. Sweetwater and several of its suppliers donated thousands of dollars worth of equipment in addition to a substantial monetary donation from Sweetwater that was used to purchase the remainder of the equipment.
“The primary purpose of an arts media lab is to provide musical opportunities for students from a technical perspective,” Weisser Park Principal Kent Martz said. “We thought we could spark the interest of a different type of learner, those with more of a technical brain. However, all students seem to love time working in the lab. We all know that the music industry has become more and more technical in nature. In this regard, it puts the school on the cutting edge with what we offer our students.”
With the lab completed over the summer, Weisser Park students began the school year with new opportunities. All students are currently working with music composition software. New Ensemble Arts classes, which take place before school, include “Making Your Own Music CD,” “Music Composition,” and “Music Movement,” a collaborative effort with dance classes. Some students are learning to record voice-overs for their music, and keyboards will soon be added.
"At Sweetwater, we firmly believe that arts education is an important ingredient for a well-rounded education,” said Kenny Bergle, aWeisserParkparent and senior sales engineer at Sweetwater Sound. “With several of us being Weisser Park parents, it was clear that the addition of a well-outfitted computer lab would further Weisser Park students' creativity and innovation and the school's superlative arts education program. It's truly an honor to have such great vendor partners like Audio Technica, Focal, Line 6, Mackie and Presonus, and we are very grateful for their support. They helped Sweetwater and FWCS put together this world-class, cutting-edge arts education lab. It's a facility that will be the envy of schools nationwide."
